Attention, Triangle design community: Signal is participating in the AIGA Raleigh Studio Open House on Thursday, March 10. Sixteen of the Triangle’s leading Graphic Design, Web Design and Advertising Agencies in Raleigh and Cary will be opening their doors to the public for this free event running from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM.
Signal is happy to be taking part in this great networking event for the local design community. Local design students, professional designers, commercial photographers, videographers, copywriters, creative directors, printer reps, paper reps, web developers, illustrators, businessowners, marketing directors, and all friends of Signal are invited to join in the fun.
While Signal’s Brier Creek location may seem a bit out of the way compared to the cluster of “inside the Beltline” agencies participating, please bear in mind that we’ll make a convenient first stop or last stop for those coming from Durham or Chapel Hill. And we’re just a quick hop down I-540 from all the Six Forks Road firms. So don’t be shy, stop by for some light hors d’oeuvres, grab some beer or wine, and enjoy a friendly round of ping pong here at the House of Creative Power.
Visit the Studio Open House Eventbrite page to register and see a full list of participating agencies and a Google Map of their locations, plus carpoolinginfo and an attendee list of all the cool folks coming. We hope to see you Thursday!
We are proud to announce that Signal’s design work for the Durham Bulls has been selected in the first annual designSPARK showcase at this year’s SPARKcon event.
SPARKcon is a showcase of creativity, talent and ideas in the Triangle area, encompassing the creative fields of art, music, dance, film, fashion and more. The event has grown larger and more prestigious in each consecutive year since being independently founded in 2006. SPARKcon is now a program of Visual Art Exchange, a Raleigh non-profit whose mission is to support emerging artists and connect the community to the arts.
Signal has earned SPARKcon inclusion for our redesign of the stadium signage at the famous Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The project included upgrades to all permanent signs for seating sections, party decks and concessions. We also created new gate entry and archway signs, window banners, suite murals, and a series of hanging championship banners.
The winning pieces will be presented to the public at the Raleigh City Museum on the September 3 opening, and then exhibited for the duration of SPARKcon on the weekend of September 17-19. All friends of Signal are invited to attend the festivities at the Museum and throughout the public spaces of Raleigh’s Fayetteville Street to enjoy the celebration of local creative excellence.
Our thanks to the designSPARK organizing committee for making Signal an official part of it!
We are proud to announce the outcome of another spirited Signal creative challenge. This time, the Signalites tackled the task of creating a mock album cover. We split into teams and each came up with an original band concept and album cover artwork across a full spectrum of musical genres. No songwriting or recording was required, though with the talented musicians among our staff, that may not be out of the question for a future challenge. Fans voted for their favorites on Signal’s Facebook page and a winner has been chosen!
Congratulations to The Howe Creek Family Gospel Singers (otherwise known as Adam, Leisha, Ginger, Chris and Hannah) who took the top honors for the album Softly & Tenderly. The Skrunchies came in a close second place with Bad Reputation, followed by Sombrero Diablo’s ¡Viva Nada!

We are pleased to welcome Robin Vuchnich back to Signal as creative director in our Raleigh office. Having previously served as a graphic designer from 2001 to 2005, Robin rejoins our team in her new role and has already delivered immediate results with her fresh thinking and creative inspiration.
“I am very excited about Robin’s return to Signal,” says Signal President Rick Haynes. “We are so fortunate to add such a talented and accomplished artist to our team. We couldn’t be happier to have her lead our creative efforts in Raleigh and our clients are already taking notice of her efforts.
Robin graduated from East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., with a BFA in Communication Arts/Graphic Design. In addition to her prior experience with Signal, she served as a senior designer at Raleigh-based Capstrat as well as principal of her own design firm. Robin’s creativity has earned her more than a dozen design awards from juried competitions including the ADDYs, the Webbys, AIGA and PRINT Magazine. Her recent work includes branding for the new Raleigh Convention Center and the Raleigh Arts Commission as well as leading creative development for The NC Health & Wellness Trust Fund’s “T.R.U.” (Tobacco Reality Unfiltered) campaigns. Other notable clients include GlaxoSmithKline, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UNC, Duke University, Quintiles and Duke Raleigh Hospital.
Robin’s duties as creative director include working closely with the creative staff to inspire and help maintain the highest quality standards. She also communicates closely with clients to make certain their project objectives and production schedules are met.
“One of the biggest things that brought me back to Signal was the integrity of the company, specifically the close-knit business family,” Robin says. “My first job out of college was as a designer for Signal. Although I thoroughly enjoyed my work with other companies it didn’t compare to the feeling I had at Signal. I am proud to see my career come full circle as I continue on with my Signal family.”
Back in April, Signalites in both our Wilmington and Raleigh, NC studios were divided into 6 teams and given the challenge of creating an original “Signal Trophy.” Photos and descriptions of each entry were posted to Signal’s fan page on Facebook, giving fans the opportunity to vote for their favorite and decide the winner.
The votes have now been tallied, and Signal is pleased to announce that the winner is Team 3 with their Master’s-inspired Signal Jacket!

“From baseball cards to Internet sites…” Signal was recently featured in Triangle Business Journal. From our beginnings designing trading cards and sports collectibles, to our current interactive design and web marketing work, the article discusses the evolution and diversification of the agency over the past 17 years. Take a gander!
Signal was honored at this year’s Triangle Ad Club ADDY® Awards with one Gold ADDY for self-promotion collateral along with two judge’s choice awards for individual favorite and for copy. The winning collateral piece was a poster created for Classic Graphics, a Research Triangle printing company, to promote its annual barbecue event. Signal was given full creative carte blanche and chose to spotlight traditional North Carolina barbecue side dishes on this year’s poster.

Signal's Award Winning Poster
Signal’s Gold-winning entry now moves to the District ADDY Awards competitions by virtue of taking top honors in its category. District winners are then forwarded to the third tier, the national ADDY® Awards competition. The ADDY Awards is the largest creative competition in the country with over 60,000 local entries competing in nearly 200 cities.
